Dr. Marie McCormick, chair of the Immunization Review
Committee noting that the CDC, which had funded the $2
million study, “wants us to declare, well, these things
are pretty safe….” Before her committee reviewed a
single study or a shred of data she expressed her
confidence that, “we are not ever going to come down
that [autism] is a true side effect of [vaccine
exposure.”
Dr. Kathleen Stratton, a member of IOM staff and study
director of the Immunization Safety Review Committee,
reiterated McCormick’s message, “We said this before you
got here, and I think we said this yesterday, the point
of no return, the line we will not cross in public
policy is to pull the vaccine, change the schedule … We
wouldn’t say compensate, we wouldn’t say pull the
vaccine, we wouldn’t say stop the program.”
The
2004 report on vaccine safety by the Institute of
Medicine states, "Absent biomarkers, well defined
risk factors, or large effect sizes, the committee
cannot rule out, based on the epidemiological evidence,
the possibility that vaccines contribute to autism in
some small subset or very unusual circumstances."
